MAPSpace celebrates the emergence of spring and Earth Month by showcasing ten artists who draw inspiration from nature’s ephemeral blooms. This ensemble of artwork in diverse mediums offers layers of complex pattern, texture, and color in imagery that is familiar, fantastical and surreal. Many artists in this collection also embrace the ethos of sustainability by incorporating repurposed materials into their creations. From rescuing single-use plastics, aluminum cans, and felled wood branches; to upcycling crochet blankets and found objects, many of these artists infuse their work with new life that add intrigue and depth to their artwork.
Ephemeral Bloom artists include Carol Bouyoucos, Charles Clary, Jared Deery, Loren Eiferman, Jeila Gueramian, Natalya Khorover, Christina Massey, Donna Namnoum, Jessica Smolinski, Lisa B. Woods; with Guest Curation by Ellen Hawley.
About the Artists:
Carol Bouyoucos’ brightly color-infused florals are fantastical hybrids that don’t necessarily exist in nature yet are somewhat familiar. Charles Clary’s ornately framed handcut paper works mimic growths much like fungal and mold, or bacterial and viral colonies. Jared Deery paints funky flowers often in still life arrangements seemingly from imagination than from observation. Loren Eiferman’s wood sculptures appear as if they’ve grown in nature, when in fact each sculpture is usually composed of hundreds of small pieces of felled wood that have been cut and fused. Jeila Gueramian is a multidisciplinary artist best known for her magical, whimsical installations combining repurposed textiles and technology. Natalya Khorover is passionate about creating beauty from repurposing materials. She transforms reclaimed single use plastics by layering and sewing various botanicals. Christina Massey is a mixed media artist using repurposed aluminum in her colorful organic abstractions. Her work blurs the line somewhere between that of painting and sculpture, craft and fine art, process based and conceptual. Donna Namnoum’s recent ceramic works are mysterious botanical forms of curvy wurvy stems and whimsical blooms. Jessica Smolinski is a multimedia artist whose work merges photography and sculpture with traditional domestic crafts, documenting serendipitous moments, evidence of changing seasons, and natural life cycles. Lisa B. Woods exhibits her video installation Plan B, part of the Uncanny Interventions series which explores artificial pollination.
